Hey Teacher!

Happy Friday, and welcome to the very first issue of Good Day Teacher!

Man, I'm excited you're here.

I've wanted to create something that celebrates the good happening in education. Because let's face it, we hear plenty about what's going wrong in our schools. But there are also some incredible teachers, students, and stories that deserve a little attention.

That's what Good Day Teacher is all about.

Every Friday, I'll share a little encouragement, a good story, some teacher humor, and a reminder that the work we do matters.

And I couldn't think of a better way to kick things off than with a story that's stuck with me for years.

It all started with a missing permission slip.

THE GOOD STUFF

It Started With a Missing Permission Slip

Our business club was getting ready for a field trip to a professional basketball game. Everything was coming together, except one of my student leaders still hadn't turned in her permission slip.

Let's call her Sarah.

I'd known Sarah for two years. She was a go-getter. She had started several small businesses and helped rebuild our club after COVID. If Sarah wanted to accomplish something, she usually found a way.

So when she didn't turn in her permission slip, I was surprised.

As class was ending one day, I pulled her aside.

"You're one of our leaders. I need you there! What's going on?"

She explained that she couldn't get the form signed. Her mother had been seriously injured and was in the hospital.

I already knew her father had passed away.

But what I didn't know was just how much Sarah was dealing with outside of school.

I started asking questions.

Where was she staying? Did she have food? Was anyone helping her?

As we talked, I learned that Sarah was living on her own in a family home after losing another loved one. She was trying to take care of herself and the family's pets with very few resources.

And somehow, she was still showing up to school and helping lead our club.

I had no idea.

I went straight to our school counselors, and they immediately jumped into action.

They arranged gift cards, connected Sarah with support, and found someone in the community to help make Christmas special for her. I reached out to a friend, and together we helped her find a job.

It wasn't one person coming to the rescue. It was a group of people doing what they could to help a student through an incredibly difficult time.

And that's one of the things I love about education. When people come together for a student, some pretty incredible things can happen.

Sarah made it to the field trip. She continued leading our club and graduated that spring.

But the moment I'll remember most happened near graduation.

Our school held a special ceremony recognizing students who had overcome significant challenges. Each student could invite an educator who had made a difference in their life.

Sarah invited me.

That meant the world to me.

You know, we see our students almost every day. We take attendance, teach lessons, remind them about assignments, and occasionally chase down a missing permission slip.

But we don't always know what they're carrying when they walk through our doors.

Sometimes a missing assignment is just a missing assignment. Sometimes a permission slip is just a permission slip.

And sometimes there's a whole lot more going on.

I'm thankful I took the time to ask Sarah what was going on that day. I'm even more thankful for the people who stepped up when they learned she needed help.

So here's my encouragement to you this week:

Keep getting to know your students. Keep asking questions. And when something doesn't seem right, don't be afraid to check in.

You won't always know the difference you're making.

Sometimes you find out years later. Sometimes you never find out at all.

And sometimes, it starts with a missing permission slip.

Your Classroom Could Be Next!

Every classroom has stories worth sharing, and we'd love to hear yours!

Big moments, little victories, funny surprises — we'd love to hear them all!

You don't have to be a writer. Just hit reply and tell me what happened. I'll help turn it into a story worth sharing.

FRIDAY FUNNY
TEACHER TALK

Let's Talk, Teachers!

Since this is our very first issue, I'd love to get to know the teachers reading along.

What's one little thing that made you smile at school this week?

A funny student comment? A lesson that actually went according to plan? A coworker who made your day?

Hit reply and tell me! I'd love to hear about the good happening in your classroom.

FAITH CORNER

“Let all that you do be done in love.”

1 Corinthians 16:14 ESV

Sometimes loving our students looks like encouraging them when they're struggling. Sometimes it's being patient when we're running low on patience ourselves. And sometimes it's simply noticing that something isn't quite right and taking a minute to ask.

We don't have to have all the answers. We weren't meant to carry every burden on our own.

But God gives us opportunities to show His love through the way we treat the people around us.

A little reminder for this week: You don't have to be a perfect teacher to make a difference. Just keep looking for those opportunities to love and serve the people God has placed in your path.
